President Barack Obama’s Quilt???

My wife is a quilter.   As a matter of fact, I think she’s a damn good quilter!   She is contributing this quilt to be part of a blind auction for a local civic cause.

Usually, once she completes the cutting, piecing and sewing, she often sends her work out to a third party to add the “batting”, backing and machine quilting for the final result (short of the binding work).   This time…instead of sending the quilt, we decided to deliver it in person.

Over the course of years, our third party quilting “resource” has developed into a great friendship.   While we were at her shop, we were talking about our kids, retirement, possible vacation plans and an assortment of other topics.   At some point during our conversation, our quilting friend said how much she loves President Obama especially because of the Affordable Care Act!   We asked what was behind this love affair!

Both she and her husband are 64 years old and are self-employed entrepreneurs.

At 64, neither are yet eligible for Medicare and have not begun to collect Social Security.   They were paying $2000 per month for health insurance!   TWO GRAND per MONTH!!!   As entrepreneurs, health insurance was their second largest monthly expense.   Once they signed up for the Affordable Care Act (aka…Obamacare), their health insurance (for the EXACT same coverage) is now $500 a month!!!

They went from two grand per month to five hundred for the EXACT same coverage!!!   I encouraged them to write the White House!

I should have pissed in the sink!

It all happened two weeks ago today.

Tuesday, April 22nd: The urination started about 2AM and repeated every hour on the hour until 8AM!   Around 10:30 I managed to make it downstairs and take a seat at the kitchen table.   About an hour later, I began to shiver...uncontrollably.   Having been denied a decent night's sleep, I returned to the bedroom.   On the way up, I noticed my right knee was a little swollen.   Got into bed and immediately fell asleep.

I woke up around 2PM with an urge to urinate.  I managed to get out of the bed and made my way to the toilet.   There a two ways to get to the toilet.   Directly from the bedroom, past a small area that contains my wife's sink and make-up area and then through another door to the other part of the bathroom that contains a walk-in shower, my sink and the toilet!   This is the path I choose!

(Far left door opening in the above photo.)   I passed my wife's sink, went through the second door and made it to the toilet.

That's the good news!   The bad news is not ALL of the urine made it into the toilet.   I made it back to the bedroom; changed underpants and crawled back into bed!   Two hours later...the same thing happened!   I followed the same path/routine!   Made it to the toilet...but, once again, I misfired and some of the urine made it into the toilet, but not all of it!

Now it was a three-peat.   This time I decided to take the alternate route!   Go through the bedroom door closest to me (opened door on the right in the photo above), and go out into (and down) the hallway... directly into the commode area of our bathroom.   I passed my sink and within 3 or 4 steps would be at the infamous toilet.   Unfortunately, Mother Nature had other plans.

I never made it.   I wound up peeing on myself and all over the bathroom floor!   In the midst of all this I was still determined to get to the damn toilet.   I still struggled to get the damn underpants off.   During that struggle, I fell. I hit the already swollen right knee, hip, rib cage and head!   As I lay there, I thought of the infamous commercial..."I've fallen, but I can't get up"!   I couldn't  About 45 minutes later, struggling on my back, I was able to make it back to the bedroom!   That's when I thought to myself...why didn't you just piss in the sink!

Soon thereafter, my wife returned home from work and my daughter happened to stop by.   It was now about 5pm and both the ladies insisted I that go to the local emergency room.   I insisted otherwise and was very stubborn in my position.   I did agree to see my internist the next day, and they settled for that because they knew I wasn't going anywhere!

Wednesday, April 23rd: Called my internist and made an appointment for 2:15pm.   Asked if he had x-ray capability at his new facility (yes) and could he have someone meet me with a wheelchair.   I was dumb enough (stubborn) to think I could drive myself.   My daughter convince me otherwise!   Once in his office, the doctor asked the nurses to help me disrobe.   It was painful!   Shortly thereafter, he entered the exam room and performed the usual "vital signs" stuff.   He called the nurses back in to help me get dressed.

"But Doc, what about the x-rays"?   "Get dressed first and we'll talk about the x-rays later"!

Once dressed, the doctor returns to the exam room and tells me the x-rays will be done, but at the local hospital.   "WHAT"?   I ask how long will I be there?   "A couple of hours" I ask.   His response..."no...a couple of days"!!!   His preliminary prognosis was a potential urinary tract infection.

Admitted via the emergency room around 4:30pm.   I was asked a thousand questions.   Two doctor's assistants enter the room and tell me they will be extracting fluids from my right knee.   The needles look to be the size of knitting needles!!!   At 10:00pm I'm rolled into my room!

Thursday, April 24th:

My 15 year old attending physician enters the room.   Takes my vitals, wants to ensure I'm comfortable, etc.   I'm bed-ridden all day and later learn that the staff, unbeknownst to my physician, refers to him as "Doogie Howser".   Dougie returns later that afternoon.   Based on the fluids extracted from my knee, he informs me that I have septic arthritis.

Septic arthritis is an intensely painful infection in a joint.   The joint can become infected with germs that travel through your bloodstream from another part of your body.   Septic arthritis can also occur when a penetrating injury brings germs directly into the joint.”

The bacterial culprit behind all of this is something called ‘Streptococcus pyogenes”.   After about an hour or so googling "Streptococcus pyogenes” (yes the hospital had Wifi), and I quickly realized that one needed an advanced degree in micro biology or something similar to even begin to understand the returns from google!
Then I stumbled across this article in language I could understand!

Streptococcus pyogenes is not a bacteria that should be taken lightly.   Many people carry the bacteria without incident, however it has the potential to cause both mild and severe diseases.   Streptococcus pyogenes has claimed many lives, including that of Muppet's creator, Jim Henson.   While most people will only suffer from mild infections, such as strep throat or impetigo during childhood, it is important to understand it's full pathogenic potential to understand how to identify, treat, and avoid these infections.”

Friday, April 25th:
Dougie returns and introduces me to his 18 year old partner in crime.   He’s the orthopaedic surgeon!   Are they recruiting these kids straight out of high school?   Surgeon recommends arthroscopic surgery and schedules it for later that afternoon!   I don’t remember the rest of that day!

Saturday, April 26th:
Surgeon returns; checks my vitals and introduces me to his teenage cohort (an internal disease specialist…IDS).   They check the drainage tube inserted into my knee to ensure everything is draining as planned.
Monday, April 28th:
IDS returns to check my vitals and removes my knee bandages.   She tells me I will be discharged the next day and will need to return to the hospital for two to three weeks of antibiotic IV infusions!   The infusions will require a PICC line?

Tuesday, April 29th:
Enter Laverne & Shirley!   Laverne has been with the hospital for 35 years and Shirley has been a nurse for 27 years!   They were both delightful and assured me they wouldn’t inflict any undo pain…and they kept to their word!

PICC in place in my upper right arm.   Notice I didn’t say bicep.   There was a bicep there years and years ago.   I checked out of White Plains Hospital around mid-afternoon.

Epilog:
Twenty-twenty hindsight…it’s probably a good thing I didn’t pee in the sink!   Why?   I probably would have delayed going to the doctor!   And who knows…I could have wound up like Jim Henson!   Dead!
Good news!   I walked around today (May 10th) without the help of a walker!!!

Rethuglicans versus the Affordable Care Act.

From CNN:
"Republicans are going all in, hoping that the payout is big.   Like control of the Senate, big!

Their big bet: Obamacare.

The deadline to enroll in the Affordable Care Act for the year has come and gone.   The Obama administration is touting the enrollment numbers as a successful first year, but Republicans think voter anger over the law is here to stay.   And so, Republicans running for House and Senate continue to make it central to their campaign.

In the Arkansas Senate race, Republican challenger Tom Cotton (pictured above) is using Obamacare to fund-raise for his race against Democratic incumbent Mark Pryor.   The first screen on Cotton's website is a plea for contributions that says, "Obamacare is so bad that Obama doesn't want it.   Tell him neither do I."

The full story at CNN.

Footnote:   What's scary is that Nate Silver believes that Mr. Cotton has a 70% chance of winning!

Affordable Care Act Reaches 7+Million Goal!

From CNN:
President Barack Obama announced Tuesday that 7.1 million people had enrolled in insurance plans sold on government-run exchanges by the close of Monday's sign-up deadline, just beating the original estimate officials made last summer.

"This law is doing what it's supposed to do, it's working," Obama said in remarks outside the White House, where he was met with sustained applause and cheers after announcing the tally, which he repeated several times, as if to savor the number.

"This law is helping millions of Americans, and in coming years it will help millions more," he said.

Obamacare is a disaster, but Kynect is Awesome!

The office of Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear just announced that more than 370,000 people have now signed up for Obamacare on KyNect, the state exchange.   More than one out of every dozen Kentuckians — 8.6 percent of the state population — now has obtained coverage through the exchange, Beshear’s office said, claiming that a preliminary analysis has established that three out of four enrollees has reported that they were uninsured before signing up.

Beshear’s office adds that more than 21,000 signed up in the last three days alone.

But as recently as three days ago, Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky was denouncing Obamacare as “disastrous,” lamenting the “catastrophic effects” the law has had on Kentucky families, and insisting that “the pain caused by this terrible law is easy to see.”   He claims the law must be uprooted “root and branch.”

Obamacare in 2 minutes!

  • ObamaCare will not use your tax dollars to fund abortions
  • ObamaCare is not and will not lead to a government takeover of health care
  • ObamaCare will not increase the national debt or deficit
  • ObamaCare does not hurt health insurance companies, but actually increases their business
  • ObamaCare is not unconstitutional
  • ObamaCare is not socialism

Toilet Water?

Sorry about all the accumulated toilet stuff posted here recently...but it is what it is!   I think about my water usage every time I brush my teeth.

How long do I run the water before it turns hot enough for me to shave?   How much goes down the shower drain?   My roots go back to Bermuda.   In Bermuda, they rely on (and accumulate) rain water for their water requirements/needs.   I remember my grandfather reminding us not to run the water or flush the toilet after every use.   It's amazing what so many of us take for granted.   It really is!

Men's room etiquette...lift the lid please!

Okay...so not all dudes are comfortable using the urinals!

But here's my story.   I'm one of the few (very few) dudes that actually takes a dump in these public roadside rest stops.   I walked into a men's room on the southbound New Jersey turnpike last week.   I think it was around exit 6 or 7?   It looked just like this!

I go because I have to take a dump.   There are at least 15+ urinals...of which 10 or so are UNOCCUPIED.

Notice there are no "separators" between the urinals.   That could be part of the problem!   Perhaps that IS the problem!   Anyway...

I head to a stall to take the dump.   Two seconds later, a dude enters the stall on my left and another dude into the stall on my right.   I don't hear a toilet seat go up...but I do hear the flow of piss and then they both exit!   Okay...so they both did flush!

Seconds later...I'm done with my business and exit the stall.   I notice that most of the urinals are still unoccupied!   Okay...so like I said...some dudes don't like to do their urinal thing next to other dudes!   Afraid someone might be checking out their junk?   Or they had an experience as depicted in the cartoon above?   Perhaps they're grossed out by the accumulated body fluids on the floor?   Or they're asking themselves...damn...when was the last time the attendant was in here?   Whatever.

My only request...for those of you that prefer to avoid the urinals...please lift up the seat in the stall so the rest of us "dumpers" don't have to deal with your pissy sh*t on the toilet seat!   PLEASE!

PS.   You gotta admit...that cartoon is a hoot!

One more dude to add to the "IST" list!

Here we go again.   Went to my oncologist (cancer dude) the other day to get my 6+ hour Rituxin treatment (poison drip).

Two hours into the ordeal oncologist sits down with me in the "poison dripping room".   He tells me he's happy with my progress, but now he wants me to schedule an appointment with a phrenologist (kidney dude)!

Hit the rewind button back to a month ago!   Same oncologist is very precautious and is heavy into blood test results.   He was concerned that my PSA count was high and recommended I see my urologist (male plumbing dude).   Urologist and his surgeon buddy is the same dude that removed my kidney ten years ago!   I scheduled an appointment to see the urologist.   Urologist is also concerned about the level of my PSA count and wants to perform a prostate biopsy the following week.   The day before the procedure, I have to do the whole enema thing!   Ugh!

I return to urologist the next day.   Receptionist informs me that I need to take two shots in the rear end (ouch...two big ouches) and then wait in the waiting room for an hour.   I mistakenly assume that these two shot were to numb my prostate for said biopsy.   Wrong!

An hour passes and my name is called.   Urologist enters the room 20 minutes later.   Once again, I'm told to strip from the waist down, lay down on my left side, knees tucked into my chest as close as possible.

Urologist takes out a long (really long) needle.   I ask what's that for?

His reply..."It's for the anesthesia!"   So I ask "what were the other two (painful shots) for" (an hour ago).   His response..."Oh those were just the antibiotic shots!"   Next image is probably not safe for work...aka NSFW!

Bottom line, 20 or so minutes later...I left the urologist's office and walked to my car.   I was was walking as if I was sodomized by something much larger than a urologist's biopsy tool...more like an elephant's trunk...if you can imagine that!

Okay...so now on to the phrenologist!

I've been to hell again and this time it's the Emergency Room!

Friday started out as a good day.   On Thursday, endocrinologist calls to tell me I don't have diabetes.   I checked in with the urologist...and learned that I don't have prostate cancer (although he wants to do another prostate biopsy in 6 months)!   That exam is not a day at the beach...but given all the other good news...it's party time people!

So I go visit my oncologist.   Well not really the dude that's treating me...but one of his co-horts.   Nurse draws the blood and all the other stuff..temperature, blood pressure, etc.   Co-hort comes in 15 minutes later and asks the usual questions and tells me that all is well.   Good news...I was in and out of there in 40 minutes...a record!

I get home at 4:30pm.   An hour later...co-hort calls and wants me to go to the hospital for an EKG and other tests.   Why...because my potassium level is elevated (5.9) and she's concerned!   My response..."it's Friday at 5:15pm...can't I do this on Monday"?   Her response..."if I thought this could wait until Monday...I would not have called you tonight"!!!

  • 5:30pm - depart home
  • 6:00pm - arrive at hospital and "sign in".   Told to sit in the waiting area.
  • 6:35pm - my name is called.   "Come with me".
  • 6:40pm - Take an EKG, temperature & blood pressure (127 over 84)
  • 6:50pm - Escorted to a gurney in the emergency room hallway because all the "rooms" are occupied.
  • 7:05pm - "Administrator" interviews me to collect all the relevant data, medical history, HIPPA stuff, insurance etc.   Says he's going on a break.
  • 7:20pm - Nurse dashes by me (I'm still in the hallway) and tells me...she'll "be right back to draw blood".
  • 7:45pm - "Blood" nurse is back and draws blood.   "We'll have result in an hour"
  • 7:55pm - Another nurse comes to take my blood pressure (now 120 over 81...not bad!)
  • 8:05pm - Doctor shows up.   Asks questions...ie..."why am I here"?.   I tell him the my oncologist co-hort told me to come here...TONIGHT!   Doctor tells me that once he gets the blood results, he'll get back to me.
  • 9:00pm - Doctor tells me all is ok.   EKG was cool and potassium was 4.8 versus the 5.9 (that caused oncologist co-hort concern).   Also suggests that I contact my internist...because two of the prescriptions that I take are known to elevate potassium levels!!!
  • 9:30pm - Arrive back home!
EKG, blood tests, emergency room!   God only knows how much this is gonna cost!   I know...better safe than sorry.   I shouldn't complain.  But still...avoid an emergency room at any cost...unless you're bleeding or have a gunshot wound!

Good news...bad news!

Good news...my 401K account is back to where it was back in 2007...just before the sh*t hit the fan!   I'm elated!   In the worst of times...I lost 60% of my investments/savings!   So...for 5 years...I could have just stuffed this money under the mattress...but I ain't complaining.   Hell we went through hurricane Sandy with no damage. Lost electricity for two days...big deal!   Like I said...I ain't complaining!

Bad news...I visited my oncologist (cancer dude) and he tells me my PSA count is a little high...and recommends I see my urologist (dude that took out my kidney)!   I asked what is a PSA count?   He explained in doctor-ese terms....so I googled it when I got back home.   Ugh!   This is the same dude that recommended I see a nutritionist (a food/health person that I haven't yet scheduled) and a endocrinologist (diabetes dude scheduled for February 11th).   More doctors to visit!   Seeing the urologist (PSA dude) tomorrow!

But more good news...I'm alive!

Add another "IST" to add to the List!

I get a call from my oncologist (cancer dude).   Based on my most recent blood tests, he's somewhat concerned about my sugar levels.   "Nothing to be alarmed about...just a little bit elevated."   "But to be on the safe side...I'd like you to see an endocrinologist (diabetes person)."   "And while you're at it...make an appointment with this nutritionist!"   Just another "IST" to add to my list.   So here's the latest recap on my ever growing "ist" list!
  • oncologist...cancer dude
  • urologist...kidney & urinary dude
  • internist...I used to refer to this person as my doctor!
  • cardiologist...heart dude
  • gastroentologist...stomach dude
  • allergist...allergy guy
  • dermatologist...skin guy
  • nutritionist...am I eating right?
  • endocrinologist...diabetes person
  • orthopedioligist...bone & muscle dude
Hopefully...there will be no more additions to my "IST" list!
